Lingerie and Cultural Differences

De schrijfster van dit stuk heeft moeite met de culturele vooringenomenheid van dit filmpje:

Mijn vraag is dus, hoe zit dat? Is wat wij in het Westen sexy vinden ook sexy voor arabische moslim vrouwen? Dit is natuurlijk een moeilijk te beantwoorden vraag, juist omdat de lingerie van deze vrouwen zo verborgen blijft voor mensen buiten deze cultuur. In ieder geval is er een aanknopingspunt: deze tentoonstelling over lingerie uit Syrië. Lees ook hier. Ook is er een boek uitgekomen n.a.v. deze tentoonstelling.  Helaas is de tentoonstelling al voorbij en heb ik hem niet gezien, maar uit de foto's en beschrijvingen lijkt op te maken dat de smaken inderdaad verschillen. 

Dit roept bij mij meteen de vraag op, of men in andere niet-westerse culturen ook verschillend denkt over wat sexy is. Als iemand daar ideeën over heeft, hoor ik het graag!

What about this statement? Is what we in the Western world see as sexy, also sexy for arab women or not? This question is difficult to answer, we western people never get to see the lingerie of arab women, since it's always covered up. But there is one lead: this exhibit on lingerie from Syria. There's also a book. Unfortunatly it's over, and I haven't seen it, but from the pictures and descriptions it looks like tastes are indeed very different.

This raises the question, are other non-Western cultures also different in their views of what's sexy? If you have any ideas about this subject, please tell me!

Mircalla

Mircalla, Countess of Karnstein, was one of the first vampires ever known to man. She had a (slightly lesbo-erotic) friendship with the protagonist/narrator of the book Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu  (1872).  Although she travelled under the name of Carmilla, she was once known as Mircalla and had been dead for years. Now she fed on human blood.

Carmilla was one of the first vampire novelas,  Bram Stokers Dracula (more famous and thrilling) was influenced by this book.

Mircalla, the gravin van Karnstein, was een van de eerste vampiers waar men weet van heeft. Ze had een (licht lesbo-erotische) vriendschap met de ik-persoon uit het boek Carmilla van Joseph Sheridan LeFanu (1872). Ze reisde onder de naam Carmilla, maar eens was ze de gravin van Karnstein, Mircalla. Ze was al jaren dood en nu voedde zij zich met menselijk bloed.


Carmilla was een van de eerste vampierromans, 'Dracula' van Bram Stoker (veel beroemder en spannender) is beïnvloed door dit boek.
